TAB Applauds Speaker Phelan on Creation of House Select Committee on Artificial Intelligence and Emerging Technology

Austin, TX — Today, Texas Association of Business (TAB) President and CEO Glenn Hamer issued the following statement after Texas House Speaker Dade Phelan announced the creation of a new House Select Committee on Artificial Intelligence and Emerging Technologies:

“Texas is leading the nation in Artificial Intelligence and technology policy, and today’s announcement is yet another testament to our state’s unwavering commitment to innovation. The Texas business community continues to embrace advancements in the technology sector as it allows us to maximize opportunities for economic growth and job creation. We commend Speaker Phelan for taking this important step to ensure that future policy decisions regarding AI and emerging technologies will continue to cultivate an economic environment that encourages economic growth and job creation for Texas.”

The Texas House Select Committee on Artificial Intelligence and Emerging Technologies will be responsible for reviewing advancements in AI and emerging technology and the economic, ethical, and societal implications of these advancements. The committee is composed of five House members, chaired by Rep. Giovanni Capriglione.

In February, TAB released an economic impact study on technology and the Texas economy, which found that the technology industry contributes more than $469 billion to Texas’ economy, nearly 20% of the state’s total GDP.

TAB’s Tech Means Business Coalition – a group of broad-based industry leaders representing employers of all sizes committed to making Texas the epicenter of technology innovation and growth – is spearheading policy discussions to ensure Texas continues to foster smart, forward-looking regulatory, tax and innovation policies to drive job creation and economic prosperity in the Lone Star State.
