Propositions 7 & 11: Expanding Property Tax Relief for Veteran Families, Seniors, and Disabled Texans

Texas hasn’t become the world’s 8th largest economy by accident. Our exponential population growth over the past two decades wasn’t by happenstance either: Texas offers an attractive quality of life that has inspired countless families, major corporations, and entrepreneurs to move and grow here, hoping to seize the boundless economic opportunities our state has to offer.
As our state lawmakers have made clear over the past several legislative sessions, reducing property taxes on Texas families and businesses remains a top priority if we expect to maintain our competitive economic edge on the global stage.
In addition to approving historic tax relief for Texas small business owners in the upcoming Constitutional Amendment Election on November 4th, Texas voters will have an opportunity to approve additional tax relief for families in our state and reduce financial burdens for many of the most vulnerable Texans, ensuring we can continue to enhance our quality of life and allow families to build generational wealth.
Proposition 7 (HJR 133) on the November ballot would authorize the Texas Legislature to enact a property tax cut for surviving spouses of fallen veterans. For families of our brave servicemembers who have made the ultimate sacrifice, it is critical for Texas to relieve property tax burdens as much as possible, allowing them to keep their homes without fear of being forced to sell.
Importantly, the proposition would allow the Legislature to provide a “portable” property tax exemption that can be applied toward a new homestead, if the surviving spouse chooses to move. This not only provides financial clarity, but sends a strong message that, in Texas, we honor our veterans and are committed to giving them the peace of mind they deserve in knowing their families will be supported for generations to come.
Proposition 11 (SJR 85), meanwhile, would increase the school homestead exemption for seniors – Texans 65 years of age or older – and Texans with disabilities from $10,000 to $60,000, lowering property tax burdens for vulnerable Texans and ensuring they can reap the full benefits of tax relief. This allows greater financial flexibility for Texans who may have complex medical needs and transportation challenges, which is especially important for those who live on fixed incomes.
By allowing consumers to retain more spending power rather than diverting funds to property taxes, this proposition will help keep more money in Texas communities, supporting smaller retailers and local service providers while preserving neighborhood stability.
While the Texas economic miracle was built on a variety of factors, there is no more important resource than our people. By passing propositions 7 and 11 this November, Texans will advance our state’s commitment to relieving property tax burdens for all Texans, especially family members of our brave men and women in uniform as well as our most vulnerable residents.
