AUSTIN, TEXAS – Today, the Texas Association of Business (TAB) unveiled a new study highlighting the transformative economic impact of North Texas’ thriving technology sector. The report projects that by 2050, Collin County alone will outpace the 2024 real gross domestic product (GDP) of several entire U.S. states — a testament to the region’s innovation-driven growth. As global innovation accelerates, this data underpins Texas’ enduring role as a national leader in economic prosperity and cutting-edge development.

The study reveals that the rapid advancement of technologies – particularly artificial intelligence (AI) – is driving significant productivity gains throughout the state. These innovations continue to position Texas ahead of the curve and offer competitive advantages.

“Texas’ dedication to innovation has positioned communities, rural and urban, across our state to be ahead of the curve on economic growth driven by the technology sector,” TAB President and CEO Glenn Hamer said. “The latest study demonstrating the monumental growth projected in North Texas, supported by our booming tech economy, is a testament to the incredible strength of technology and artificial intelligence to boost productivity, job creation, and manufacturing in regions across our state.”

The study, conducted by Prestige Economics, found that by 2050, Collin County is projected to account for:

  • 10% of Texas’ total GDP;
  • 7% of the Texas workforce; and
  • 6% of the Texas population.

Additionally, the study found that by 2050, Collin County’s GDP will rival that of Missouri’s GDP in 2024 and is projected to be three times the size of Oklahoma’s 2024 GDP.

“Technology investments and the number of technology jobs in Texas are accelerating. In the future, their impact on Texas real GDP growth will be even more significant. As artificial intelligence, automation, and data center expansions reshape the way work is done, the resulting productivity gains from technology will become a powerful driver of economic growth in Texas through 2050,” said Jason Schenker, President of Prestige Economics. “Even modest increases in tech employment are expected to generate substantial contributions to real GDP, particularly in fast-growing regions like Collin County. This is a story about the rising importance of technology and how tech growth can drive fundamental economic transformation, shaping the future of the Texas economy for decades to come.”
