TAB Statement on EPA Greenhouse Gas Findings
Austin —The Environmental Protection Agency endangerment finding that greenhouse gases threaten public health and welfare sets a dangerous precedent that allows the executive branch to threaten the entire country and our economy, essentially saying to Congress: pass a cap-and-trade climate bill… or else. The uncertain status of the science of climate change and the public health effects of greenhouse gases demand that EPA establish far more justification for this action than it has shown so far. The threat this finding poses to hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of jobs during financial times like these speaks volumes of the priority this Administration gives to the families who will lose their livelihoods under the full impact of programs these findings will set in motion.
Regardless of where one stands on the debate of global warming and its causes, carbon dioxide is a natural and essential component of our atmosphere. It is clearly not a pollutant in the same sense that ozone precursors such as nitrogen oxides are and cannot in any rational way be regulated under the complex provisions of the federal Clean Air Act without devastating impact to our national economy.
